Monterey Square

The Battle of Monterrey was fought in 1846 during the Mexican-American War and Savannah honored this US victory by naming one of its last squares after it. Monterey Square commemorates the capturing of the city of Monterrey by General Zachary Taylor. The monument in the center of Monterey Square honors General Casimir Pulaski, the Revolutionary War hero. It is rumored that an unkown soldier or even Pulaski himself is buried beneath this monument (although it is claimed that he was buried at sea). The Mercer-Williams House, of the "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" fame is located on Monterrey Square. Another notable Savannah building includes Congregation Mickve Israel (the only Gothic-style synagogue in the US, Ca. 1878).
